How To Install Lincrusta And Anaglypta Paintable Wallpaper

Lincrusta and Anaglypta Relief Wall Coverings, Borders and Dados are embossed, durable coverings that enhance the décor of your Victorian or period house but have the added advantage of helping to hide old or uneven walls and ceilings that may otherwise need replastering. They are both hard wearing but Lincrusta is extremely hard wearing - as hard wearing as linoleum being made from very durable materials. Anaglypta is closer to the weight of a normal wallpaper.

Lincrusta and Anaglypta Paintable Wallpapers are both designed to be painted either in a single colour or with different decorative techniques including highlighting and glazing. Both Anaglypta and Lincrusta come in a variety of different designs and the uniqueness of the finished product is only as limited as your imagination.

How do you install Lincrusta wallpaper?

  • Remove old wallpaper from the wall and clean the surface with ammonia solution.
  • Scrape any loose, peeling or blistering paint.
  • Fill large cracks and depressions
  • Any glossy surfaces must be sanded down as the adhesive will not stick to a glossy surface.
  • Apply a water-based acrylic wallpaper primer to the wall surface.
  • Allow the wall surface to dry between each step.
  • If papering walls and ceilings, do the ceilings first.

  • It is best to keep Lincrusta in a warm area in the hours prior to hanging.
  • Plan your project so that the first and last strips meet in the least conspicuous place.
  • Never wrap Lincrusta around corners, always trim to the corner and join at the corner.
  • Establish a plumb line.
  • If the product has a taped edge for protection, it must be trimmed prior to installation.
  • With a roller or sponge, liberally spread warm water on the back of the cut strip, cover with plastic and let soak for at least 30 minutes. Wipe away excess water.
  • Apply a generous, even coat of Lincrusta adhesive on the back of the strip. Just before hanging, apply a thin even coat of adhesive to the wall surface.
  • Hand smooth the strip into place, matching the pattern and joining the seams.
  • Trim the top and bottom with a straight edge and sharp blade.
  • With a rubber roller, apply even pressure to the entire surface (small bubbles will disappear within one week)
  • 48 Hours after installation, fill any joints, gaps or holes
  • Clean the Lincrusta with white spirit before painting.

  • Using a heavy duty, clay based paste and being careful not to stretch the wallpaper, smooth into place with a soft wallpaper brush, matching the pattern and joining the seams.
  • Trim the top and bottom with a straight edge and sharp blade. Gently remove excess paste, being careful not to flatten the relief pattern.
  • Apply two coats of flat or semigloss latex paint 24 hours or more after installation. Oil-based paints can be used only if the wallpaper is first painted with latex. Eggshell/semigloss is recommended to allow for easy cleaning.

This is great information. However there is a missing detail that I’m struggling with. When hanging anaglypta style textured papers you said to use a heavy duty clay-based paste, but do you paste the back of the paper or the wall?

Thanks for your question Ceri. Most clay-based pastes can be applied to the back of the paper before hanging. Alternatively, you can use the manufacturer’s ready-made Anaglypta wallpaper paste designed for this application. This product can be found here:

We hope that this helps and good luck with your project.
